You may have noticed people talking about a new Game of Thrones Season 6 ad—like a half trailer?—that aired during a basketball game on Thursday night. Just on TV! Up until this afternoon, all we had online were camera-on-TV-screen coverage, which is awkward at best. The fabulous and amazing Manu shared a bunch of still shots on Twitter, which was our first awareness of the new ad, and someone else (it’s late and I can’t be bothered; go look at Watchers and you’ll see it) recorded the video and shared it on YouTube. It was hilarious, you could totally see the reflection of the guy with his camera. Anyway! We have a new, quick Season 6 ad, with a little bit of new content. Look at this!
Right? And we also got a very shiny new Season 6 article in Entertainment Weekly with beautiful photos, some production stills and some posed portraits just for EW, including excellent coverage of our dearest Big Wench. I wrote a sort of mash-up of the EW article and the new ad, and it went live at FanSided earlier today (Saturday).
ETA: I JUST PICKED UP SOMETHING ELSE.
What I want to share is, with the recent promo material for Season 6, including the official trailer, the new ad, the EW article, and the initial big set of production stills, I think we’re finally getting a bit of positive evidence for Brienne making a connection with Sansa for at least a little while.
I don’t want to get too confident! I still keep on thinking this will be the one, big thing I end up being totally wrong about, but the new stuff is kind of sort of getting my hopes up a lot. It’s not conclusive evidence, but it’s a bit more substantial than just saying the protection assignment hasn’t been ruled out. We still don’t have an instance of Sansa and Brienne in the same shot, but we’re getting more detail on Sansa and Theon’s escape from Winterfell, and it appears to be bringing them and Brienne closer together. For instance, we see Sansa and Theon running through the woods together, we see Theon running into some Bolton troops with dogs, and we see Brienne going ballistic on some Bolton troops.
Of course, it’s still possible that Brienne will run into one pack of Bolton hunters and mow them down, while some other hero who was kept invisible and unheard all through Season 5 somehow shows up at just the right spot to rescue Sansa and Theon at the same time, and where the fuck is Podrick in all this? But with this imagery, plus Gwendoline Christie’s segment in the EW article, I like what I’m seeing so far.
With that in mind…I’m not saying, for sure, that this is what Brienne looks like when Sansa’s screaming at her for not having shown up earlier…but I have an idea about that wound on her arm:
I think that looks like a dog bite.
UPDATE: I just noticed what Gwen did with her Tweet! I never thought I’d spend time analyzing emojis, but look at this and hear me out:
I can’t believe I didn’t notice this until just now, but that is the Tweet currently pinned to the top of Gwen’s Twitter profile, and look at how she’s chosen to dress it up: the fist and flexed arm, the swords, the blue shield, are all unsurprising for Brienne, and in the middle, I see a candle. Why would she be showing us a candle, in this context? Here is the beginning of Gwen’s segment in the EW article:
You’ll be relieved to know: Brienne is finished waiting around in the snow. “After Season 5, people would come up on the street moaning about why wasn’t Brienne doing more,” Gwendoline Christie says of her character, who spent the back half of last year patiently watching for a distress signal from Sansa. “I got the scripts for Season 6 and I thought the story was so fantastic. It’s really exciting to see Brienne burst forth again.”
I think she’ll be rewarded for all those long days she spent waiting to see that candle. She’s showing up for the job.
