More of this, please, Game of Thrones!

We interrupt my sudden fit of railing against gun rights to talk about Game of Thrones filming again. This is worth the interruption. Watchers on the Wall brings us news of actress Melanie Liburd joining the cast for S6! I’d never heard of her before now, but she’s so gorgeous!

We don’t know what role she has. She’s filming in Peñíscola, Spain, which means she’ll be interacting with the Meereen crowd, which is not really surprising as nearly all the non-white characters we’ve seen so far on the show have been in Essos. (A notable exception is pirate Salladhor Saan, who in the books is Lyseni, meaning blond.) I’m so happy to see a dark-skinned black woman getting a role—presumably a speaking role, maybe even with a bit of substance?—on Game of Thrones. While I adore the show more than any healthy person should adore anything, it is way too white and I’d like to see some more changes to that. It shouldn’t have taken this long, but better late than never. Melanie is beautiful. I can picture her as a smart young priestess from the Summer Isles.
