Game of Cliffhangers, Addendum: Podrick Payne’s Axe

Another question left open by Mother’s Mercy:

What happened to Podrick?

He sees the foot soldiers flying Stannis Baratheon’s sigil on the field, he goes to Brienne and tells her it’s Stannis. She gives a perfunctory glance back at the Broken Tower, where the window is still dark, and they head off. As they head off, we get a very clear, obvious shot of Podrick grabbing his two-edged axe.

We see Podrick from the shoulders down, in blurry motion. A two-edged axe is lodged in a tree stump. Podrick reaches for the axe handle.

Which means he’s prepared to do some fighting.

While Brienne runs off to behave like someone in sub-par mental health due to lack of self-care, Sansa doesn’t stay in the tower very long. She has a clear view of the battle below, and it’s a bloodbath. After maybe a few minutes of watching the slaughter on the field, she turns around and runs out of the tower.

Her running out of the tower leads directly to her joining up with Theon and jumping off the wall. (I expect they’ll both walk away with minimal injuries.) From Sansa’s point of view, she has no idea of whether her protector was on the way. For all she knows, the person who asked her to light the candle in the Broken Tower simply couldn’t come fast enough and Sansa couldn’t afford to wait any longer.

The question mark is: when we see Brienne indulging her dark side on wounded, exhausted Stannis, Podrick and his axe are nowhere in sight.

Therefore, yet another cliffhanger for this episode is: Where the fuck was Podrick, and what was he doing?
